Remember that creditors always send important messages in writing. That’s why it’s vital to read your letters straight away. If a court letter has a deadline to respond, make sure you meet it.
It helps to get organised… file all the letters in date order in one place – putting them in a ring binder can be really helpful and keep them safe. You’ll feel more on top of it, too.
While it’s important to do the best you can to stay on top of things, be aware that some creditors out there may use all sorts of dodgy tactics to mislead you and make you feel really under pressure:
- Giving you little time to reply
- Sounding like a solicitor when they’re not!
- Threatening court action, bankruptcy, enforcement agents, sheriff officers and bailiffs – although they’re probably just saying these might happen, not that they will definitely happen.
DID YOU KNOW?
Your creditors shouldn’t lie or send you letters that pretend to look like court forms. They also are not allowed to send letters addressed to ‘the occupier’ or tell other people about your debt.
