Coping with debt payments while you’re receiving benefits can be really stressful, especially with Government caps on benefits.
It’s important to see if you’re receiving all the help you’re entitled to. Your local Jobcentre Plus will be able to help with this and you can also use the Government benefits calculator and check online.
Living on a limited fixed income can be really tough, let alone paying off debts too. If this is a recent change because you’ve just become unemployed, speak to your creditors and ask for a payment holiday while you sort out new work. Most creditors are helpful in this way as they’d rather wait to reclaim their money than take legal action.
You’ve got fewer options open to you when you’re on benefits. For example, in Scotland, you can’t use your benefits to fund a Trust Deed. However, if you live elsewhere, you could still potentially apply for an IVA, although this will take into account your assets such as your home and car, depending on their value.
