Overpayments may not sound like debt, but,
trust us, they are. And as they’ll all be with HMRC (Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs), you need
to tackle them as soon as you can. That’s because the results of falling behind with any payments to HMRC can be more severe than with other types
of debt. You could end up with deductions taken straight from your earnings – or a bailiff on your doorstep. Worse still, prison, when things
are really bad.
Sometimes, people end up with an overpayment because HMRC’s tax credits and some other benefits are based on estimates of your income. So it’s all worked out in advance. If you end up earning more than they’d expected – especially
if you haven’t let them know – then they could decide you’ve been overpaid.
If you don’t tackle this, the consequences can be extremely serious. They can arrange to reclaim
the overpaid money in one of these ways:
Get in touch with the charity Stepchange for more information on your options and support. So long as HMRC don’t deem your overpayment as fraudulent, (i.e. deliberately misleading),
you’ll be able to find a helpful solution.
We may also be able to help with one
of our debt solutions.
